  10. 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  11. 1/4 teaspoon hing/asafoetida
  12. 2 medium onion
  13. 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  14. 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  15. 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  16. 2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  17. 1 teaspoon garam masala
  18. to taste Salt
  19. 1 potato
  20. 1/4 cup pigeon Peas or green peas
  21. For kadhi -
  22. 1 cup yoghurt
  23. 2 tbsp chickpea flour
  24. 2 cups water
  25. 2 tbsp oil
  26. 1/4 teaspoon mustard seeds
  27. 1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
  28. 1/4 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  29. 1/4 teaspoon hing/asafoetida
  30. 6-8 curry leaves
  31. 1 tbsp coriander leaves
  32. 1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
  33. 1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
  34. 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  35. 1 teaspoon red chilli powder
  36. 2 teaspoon coriander powder
  37. to taste Salt

Instructions to make to make Masala Khichdi and Kadhi

  1. First of all mix rice and yellow moong dal and wash it with clean water 3 to 4 times.
  2. Now heat oil in a pressure cooker and add all the whole spices. Now add mustard seeds and let it crackle. Add hing and thinly sliced onion and saute it until the onions are brown in colour. Now add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, garam masala and salt to it and mix it properly. Add chopped potatoes and pigeon peas to it and give it a good mix.
  3. Now add rice and dal to the pressure cooker along with 4.5 cups of water and mix everything well. If you want rice grains separated then add less water.
  4. Now Cover the pressure cooker and cook it until three to four whistles on high heat. Let the pressure come down itself then only open the pressure cooker.
  5. To make kadhi, add yoghurt and chickpea flour in a bowl and whisk it so that no lumps are left. Now add two cups of water and whisk it again.
  6. Heat oil in a pot and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds and fenugreek seeds. When the mustard seeds crackle, add hing, curry leaves and coriander leaves to it. Now add ginger and garlic paste along with turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. Saute it for half a minute and pour the yoghurt mixture to the tadka and cook it on low to medium heat continuously stirring it.
  7. When it gets the first boil, add coriander powder and mix well. Cook for two minutes and turn off the heat. You can add some water to adjust the consistency according to your choice if needed.
  8. Serve hot masala khichdi and kadhi along with ghee, papad and pickle.
